Textile, tourism & tech to drive country’s development: Modi 'mantra' for India's development

Prime Minister Narendra Modi said on 24th February 2025 that textile, tourism and technology --three Ts -- will be the key drivers of India’s developed future as the sectors will create crores of new jobs.

Inaugurating Madhya Pradesh’s Global Investors Summit-2025 (GIS-25) in Bhopal, Modi said India, with rich tradition, skills, and entrepreneurship in textiles, is the second-largest producer of cotton, silk, polyester and viscose.

Underlining the importance of GIS-25, the PM said ‘Viksit MP’ is necessary in the journey towards ‘Viksit Bharat’.

Trade, tech, tourism, to be key drivers for Assam's growth: Piyush Goyal

Union commerce and industry minister Piyush Goyal on 26th February 2025 said 3Ts trade, technology and tourism along with 3Is industry, infrastructure and investment will take Assam towards development.

 A permanent exhibition hall and convention centre like the Bharat Mandapam will be set up in Assam as a joint venture between the Centre and the state government, Goyal added.

CBDT introduces new rules for business trusts and investment funds, tightening compliance and updating tax forms

The Central Board of Direct Taxes has implemented new rules requiring business trusts to file income distribution statements by June 15. Updated forms necessitate separate disclosures of dividend income and capital gains for business and investment funds, impacting REITs, InvITs, AIFs, and ARC trusts.

UK trade secretary, investment minister firm up 17 new export, investment deals during India visit

During visits to India, UK Trade Secretary Jonathan Reynolds and Investment Minister Poppy Gustafsson announced 17 new export and investment deals. The recent Indian budget increasing FDI in insurance to 100% enhances British firms' expansion potential. Over 950 Indian companies in the UK and 650 UK firms in India collectively support over 600,000 jobs. The UK has the third largest technology economy in the world, and a number of UK technology companies have also announced expansion into India.

Australia to invest $16m to boost trade ties with India

Australian exporters to save $2 bn in tariffs due to trade pact with India

Exporters from Australia saved around $2 billion in tariffs by the end of December 2024 due to tariff concessions implemented under the Economic Cooperation and Trade Agreement (ECTA), or the interim trade deal, between the two countries, according to an official statement.

 “Our free trade agreement with India has saved Australian businesses hundreds of millions of dollars… the savings are having a direct impact for Australians, reducing costs at the checkout and creating local jobs. Australia continues to make progress in its negotiations with India on a new free trade agreement, which will unlock even more trade opportunities for Australian businesses,” the Australian government said in a statement as it launched “A New Road Map for Australia’s Economic Engagement with India” on 26th February 2025.

400 business leaders meet EU Commission for Clean Industrial Deal

One year after the launch of the Antwerp Declaration, 400 business leaders gathered to discuss the Clean Industrial Deal with European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen.

Representing 200,000 textile companies and 1.3 million workers across Europe, EURATEX welcomes the Clean Industrial Deal as a crucial framework to support industrial competitiveness.

EURATEX has outlined four key priorities within the Clean Industrial Deal that must be addressed to safeguard the textile sector:

Affordable Energy Action Plan: Securing stable and competitively priced energy is essential to retain textile production in Europe and sustain employment.

Public Procurement Reform: Prioritising EU-made, sustainable textiles in public tenders will support responsible production and foster demand for innovative, eco-friendly products.

Competitiveness Fund: SMEs, which form the backbone of the textile industry, require targeted financial support to invest in new technologies, upskill their workforce, and enhance competitiveness.

Clean Trade and Investment Partnerships: To ensure fair global competition, trade agreements must uphold environmental and social standards across supply chains.

International trade fair for apparel, textiles and textile technologies opens in HCM City

The Vietnam International Trade Fair for Apparel, Textiles and Textile Technologies (VIATT 2025) opened at the Saigon Exhibition and Convention Centre in HCM City on February 26 2025, providing a hub for suppliers and buyers across the entire textile value chain to meet and explore collaboration opportunities.

Organised by the Vietnam Trade Promotion Agency under the Ministry of Industry and Trade, and Messe Frankfurt (HK) Ltd, a global textile trade fair organiser, the second edition of the fair has attracted over 400 exhibitors from 24 countries and regions, with national and regional pavilions from India, Japan, the Republic of Korea, Pakistan, Taiwan (China), and Thailand, together with the new European pavilion.

Italian textile fair reports new global interest, expanded exhibitor list

Cernobbio, Italy — Officials from Proposte, the annual textile and fabric fair held near Como, Italy, have announced that new exhibitors have registered to attend the 2025 show in May.

For the 32nd edition of Proposte, new fabric suppliers from Belgium, Germany, the United Kingdom, Finland and Italy are exhibiting, bringing the total number of international exhibitors to nearly 80 companies. Additionally, two key fabric suppliers are returning to the fair, and the expanded exhibitor list offers new options for upholstered furniture and fabric buyers interested in sourcing “cutting-edge collections,” according to officials.

Pakistan increases its place in Turkish textile exports up to threefold

Turkish textile sector‘s export figures for January 2025 have been announced. In the report published by the Istanbul Textile and Raw Materials Exporters’ Association (ITHIB), Egypt and Pakistan stood out with high increase figures.  

Exports of Turkish textiles and raw materials increased by 5% compared to January of the previous year and totalled 986 million dollars. Apparel and garment exports, on the other hand, started the year with exports of 1.2 billion dollars with a 1% decrease. While the general export figures were realised as 21.2 billion dollars with an increase of 6% compared to January 2024, the share of textile and raw materials exports in general exports was 5%. It is stated that this share reached 10.5% with ready-to-wear and apparel exports.  

  • Turkish textile exports to Pakistan increased by 94 percent in January

On the basis of value, the most exported country groups in January 2024 were the European Union, Africa and Asia, respectively. Looking at the export figures on the basis of quantity, the EU countries maintained the first place, while the second place was taken by Asia and the third place was taken by Africa.

EVFTA leads to many positives after 5 years: Vietnam's CIEM

Vietnam’s Central Institute for Economic Management (CIEM) recently flagged several positive outcomes of the EU-Vietnam Free Trade Agreement (EVFTA) after five years of implementation.

Presenting a report, head of CIEM’s general research department Nguyen Anh Duong pointed out remarkable results, including a robust growth of exports to the European Union (EU), particularly in key sectors like textiles and footwear that significantly benefit from tariff incentives.

The agreement has cultivated a transparent business environment, attracting high-quality foreign direct investment (FDI) from the EU, especially in high-tech and sustainable development sectors.

US Senators push bill to counter unfair foreign trade practices

US Senators Todd Young (R-Ind) and Tina Smith (D-Minn) have introduced the Leveling the Playing Field 2.0 Act, aimed at fortifying US trade remedy laws against unfair foreign trade practices.

The legislation seeks to provide stronger tools to counteract trade circumvention tactics, particularly those linked to China’s Belt and Road Initiative (BRI), which subsidises China-based companies operating in foreign markets.

The bill has received backing from some of the major American industry groups.
